I have a conundrum.
Our neighborhood is doing an activity called “booing.” You take a couple of treats, a Halloween picture and a photocopied poem explaining the activity, put them all in a bag and place it in front of a neighbor’s front door. It has to be anonymous. The “booed” neighbor reads the poem to understand the rules, puts the Halloween picture on their door to show that they’ve been booed, acquire treats for two of their neighbors and deliver them anonymously. And then THOSE two neighbors make treats for two of THEIR neighbors, and so on. It’s spread throughout the neighborhood and everyone loves it. Or almost everyone.
Two weeks ago, I made pumpkin muffcakes and anonymously gave some to our next-door neighbors. I included a list of ingredients in case they had any allergies.
Today, I found the bag at our house. We had already been booed – a picture has been on our door for two weeks - so the neighbors weren’t trying to boo us. I looked inside and the muffcakes were untouched. The poem and the boo-picture were also inside.
What…?
Weird.
Wouldn’t they realize it’s more offensive to return everything than to pretend they had received it?

How did the neighbors know that it was you who booed them? Wasn’t it anonymous? But, that was pretty rude of them.
